Well there are many ways to collect and or generate news. But it would seem our once esteemed local news paper, has turned to trying to incite disorder, by means of criminal acts of vandalism, as a way of generating news. The only people out to make a debate over the issue of "Horned Vikings" is the newspaper. Anyone that has actually followed the work being done by the multitude of Dannevirke groups, organizations and individuals such as: the Dannevirke Promotion and Development Society Inc, Tararua District Council, Host Lions, Rotary, Fantasy Cave, Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce, Dannevirke Community Board, Dannevirke Art Society, Builders, Bricklayers and Volunteers would have noticed the awesome new Welcome to Dannevirke signs.
When you consider the cost of about $20,000 each, not to mention the many free hours of so many people that went into the project. It can only be seen as one hell of a slap in the face, to see the local paper basically turn against every Community orientated group we have: I know I find it insulting to see the Dannevirke rag try to create a debate and suggest cutting off the horns. The puzzling bit about the articles is they keep referring to our statues, of which there are none. So someone at the paper is not doing very good research if any.
As stated on the Dannevirke Promotions Website: "A note regarding the Viking Icon Project: An icon is an image - a branding - a trademark - which is NOT necessarily historically correct."
The sad part is: the biggest event (RWC) to come our way in years, will for the most part pass us by. If Dannevirke had rallied and pulled finger to get the Viking Icon erected, just imagine the traffic not to mention trade that would have stopped, shopped and spread the word of the wee town with the massive Viking Icon. If one really thinks about it, it could have given the town and district one hell of a boost. But instead a few narrow minded people who just don't get the big picture, stand to send us into the realms of insignificance.
Sure crime makes news.. but when a paper tries to use Vandalism By Proxy.. it is a whole new ball game
