Dannevirke Lions: Fund Raising Event

Dannevirke’s  “SHREK” – John Walshe

8th, March 2010

Update for the Shearing Shrek John Project:

Organization for the event is now falling into place and set to be a very positive event.

Event Time and Date:

The Shear Off will be held beside the Fairbrother clock tower (Ward street Dannevirke) March 11 , 2010,   5.30 pm.

Shrek John will be piped along High Street CBD by Harvey Sattrup in a sheep pen on the back of a truck and ending up in Ward Street in vicinity of FMG offices.
Bob Dresser will MC, introducing the Lions President George Popow, then Shirley Walker and then to Shearing MC Tom Castles.

Bob Dresser will close the event with vote of thanks to all.

All sponsorship/donations to Shrek John to be deposited at Information Centre where a receipt will be issued.

ALL those having head sheared should register with Info Centre whether they are doing it privately or wish it done at event, as stated they also can get sponsors for their head shearing.

We would certainly like to have some idea of how many wish to be sheared at the Event by Tuesday/Wednesday this week.
All Hairdressing Salons in Town & Norsewood have volunteered to shear - so it is likely that all could have hair shorn professionally. (Please note: Clean hair only).

Hairdressers who have taken the time to volunteer there services:

Power Cut

Zest

Deja Vu

The Barber Shop

Jagged Edge

Dinamikz

Static Hair Design, Queen St

Country Cut & Curls/Norsewood.

Any other hairdresser who would like to take part can contact Info Centre dvkeinfocentre@xtra.co.nz

At present the even is really short of volunteers - at time of print we only have five, and to make the event a great success it would be awesome to have many more.

This is a good cause for the community to work together so why not get your: business, club, school etc accepting the challenge of one or some of their number being shorn.

You can register with the Information Centre today.

Download Registration Form and drop off or fax it to the Dannevirke Info Centre.

The event has also had a great offer of Helicopter ride from Outback Helicopters for children with cancer related illnesses, and an equally great separate offer of plane ride for those kids.

John Walshe has three rugby jerseys that will go on Trade Me to raise funds 1 x Sharks signed by team, 1 x Hurricanes signed by team and 1 x South African signed by captain John Smit.

Update Re Shearing Shrek John Project.

The date and place remains the same but time of start will now be 5.30pm - a more convenient time.

The Challenge is for like-minded folk to be shorn and they can be sponsored by friends/relatives/neighbours/workmates/clubmates/themselves etc and they should register with the Information Centre.

Depending on numbers wishing to be shorn at the event they are asked to bring along their own battery operated hair clippers etc and a friend to do the shearing.

For those not wishing to be shorn in public should do so prior to the event and come along and support Shrek John - the others and the Project

Of course all monies donated to the Challengers should also be deposited at the Info Centre where a receipt will be issued.

Further up-dates may be forthcoming

SHEARING SHREK JOHN

Well known identity, especially in farming circles, John Walshe has thrown down a challenge to anyone wanting to join him on his campaign to raise funds for child cancer patients in the Dannevirke district.

Left Dannevirke Lions Bob Dresser, John Walshe and Dannevirke Cancer Society Tararua Field Officer Shirley Walker, in hand shearing clippers for the Shear Off March 11th (photo by Karen Blair www.dannevirke.net.nz)
Not that many others will probably have as much hair, and beard to discard as John.
He bet a friend 15 years ago that he wouldn’t have a shave or cut his hair – and he hasn’t. Although come St Patrick’s Day he’s often been seen with green and/or orange hair for a month or two, adding a touch of colour to places such as the Dannevirke Saleyards where he is a `regular’.

The shear-off is being organised as a Dannevirke Lions community fund raiser event, represented by Bob Dresser and supported by Dannevirke based Cancer Society Tararua Field Officer Shirley Walker also backs this fund raiser 100%.

John was at the second ewe fair earlier in the day (buying and selling).

To show his company’s support for the Shear Off, PGG Wrightson manager Roger Watts said the company will sponsor $500 and “challenges other businesses to do the same”.
Dannevirke Lions will also put up $500 – making $1000 as a good starting point.

There has been a lot of interest from the community, a weight in guessing competition, of the `fleece’ (hair & beard) will be included at $2 an entry.
Registrations from businesses/clubs/schools etc accepting the challenge of one or some of their number being shorn should register with the Information Centre.
The Shear Off will be held beside the Fairbrother clock tower (Ward street Dannevirke) March 11 , 2010,   5.30 pm.

John says his main aim is to support Dannevirke children with cancer and their families.

Cheques should be made payable to:

Lions Club of Dannevirke Shearing Shrek John Appeal Account

Donations may be hand delivered or posted to:

Lions Club of Dannevirke Shearing Shrek John Appeal

Dannevirke Information Centre

Town Hall Building

156 High Street,
Dannevirke 4930.

All funds will then be forwarded to the Lion’s “SHEARING SHREK JOHN “fundraising account.

All sponsorship goes to the Dannevirke Cancer Support Group who will distribute the money to support children with cancer related illnesses and their families in Dannevirke and District

We will keep you updated on Johns progress, as there are charity auctions coming up before the Shear Off on March 11th.
