Welcome
To Dannevirke Signs: Update
Work is
now well underway for the upgrade of Dannevirke's welcome sign at the
southern end of town. Having been stripped back to bare bones, it is good
to see the new look taking shape. To find out more about the project read
our previous article.

more.

The new
look Viking has been cut out and sent off to the artist for painting. In
the mean time contractors have been busy overhauling the site. One of the
more interesting components of the sign is the new old wall.. It is both
pure genius and a work of art in its own right. Trevor Nelson and his team
from Trevor Nelson Plastering commenced work on the wall yesterday and
it's almost complete.

Welcome To Dannevirke Signs
07 July,
2010
Did you know:
That early this year our Welcome signs were classed by a tourist who
photographed and published a book on NZ town welcome signs as one of the
top three in the country.
Recently the local
paper published a letter from an individual regarding the poor state of
our Welcome To Dannevirke signs. Unbeknown to the individual and the
general public, consultation was already underway between the
Dannevirke Promotion and Development
Society Inc, Tararua
District Council, Host Lions,
Rotary, Fantasy Cave, Dannevirke
Chamber of Commerce, Dannevirke Community Board and the Dannevirke Art
Society. It has since been formally agreed in principal at a recent
meeting of the Dannevirke Promotion and Development Society Inc, to
proceed with the development and upgrade of the Welcome To Dannevirke
signs at the northern and southern entrances to town.
The entire sign at
the northern end is to be moved to the vicinity of the Mangatera Car
Park area. As the southern end sign involves less development it shall
be upgraded first.
The development and
upgrade includes a new old wall, yes you read that correctly. The new
wall which shall replace the older concrete block wall at the southern
end is to be constructed from recycled bricks. This is to give an
overall appearance of an aged look, enabling this feature to appear as
authentic as possible.
For
those who know your history; it also connects with the old Danish wall
which dates back to around the year 940. And if you recall (the Wall)
was the official seal of the old Borough Council.
It was an interesting
meeting with Mike Harold from the Dannevirke Art Society present. Having
travelled to Dannewerk a township named after the largest archaeological
monument in northern Europe, Mike has seen the
great wall. And
it was at this time the connection of the meaning of the word Dannevirke
“Danes’ Work” really hit home. For Mike the connection was a feeling of
the people that built the great wall and those that struggled to clear
the land and district on which we now stand.
The
Dannevirke
for which our town is named was an extensive Viking age fortification
line, and it held strong emotive and symbolic ties to these early
settlers, as the site fell into German hands in the 1864 German-Danish
War. Only eight years prior to the settlers arriving in Dannevirke, New
Zealand.
The new signs shall
include the new Viking Icon image, no the Icon has not been scrapped, as
it will cost more we have to wait a little longer for it.
The remainder of the
sign will be given a facelift and new longer lasting materials are
proposed for the actual signage. The base will be planted with suitable
vegetation and the lighting of the entire sign shall be improved.
Join in and help
make our signs number 1 in the country!
It is hoped that
Dannevirkians as a whole will get behind this stage of the upgrade to
our town.

A
message from
the Chairman about the Viking Icon Project
Residents of Dannevirke & District: Please
take note of the following very important information:
The Dannevirke Promotion &
Development
Society (Inc.) will raise the necessary money to build the Viking Icon
- monies will NOT be levied from
rates.
The Dannevirke Domain Triangle is
the prime site;
The Viking Icon is NOT a statue;
An icon is an image - a branding
- a trademark - which is NOT necessarily historically correct;
The Viking Icon
compliments our town and district's Scandinavian
Theme;
The Viking Icon has given
Dannevirke the best publicity that it has ever had and is already
associated with the town;
The Viking Icon will give ever-increasing
New Zealand and overseas tourists a special reason to travel through
and stop in Dannevirke. This also can benefit Tararua as a whole;
Tourist dollars spent here are
"free" dollars - not part of the local "money-go-round". "Free"
dollars are extra dollars and extra dollars mean a more prosperous
community.
Dannevirke must move forward to
survive.
YOUR
SUPPORT IS SO VERY IMPORTANT - THANK YOU
Malcolm Peffers
Chairperson - Dannevirke Promotion & Development Society (Inc.)
