Dannevirke The Viking Capital Of New Zealand Dannevirke Promotion And Development The Viking Icon Project
19 January 2008 A Good Brand:
In our own time, the Viking has become a widely used icon in commercials. Outside Scandinavia, he is an easily recognized figure, which can at a glance be identified as “Danish”. An international survey in the 1980’ies showed that the Viking was the third-most known Danish phenomenon, only surpassed by two famous football players.
In Denmark, the Viking is a figure that implies tradition, strength and reliability. Good craftsmanship and high quality are characteristics of the Vikings, and they are therefore often used in the marketing of various products (usually entirely without a real link to the historical Viking Age).
Equipped with the unhistorical, but highly characteristic, horned helmets, he is an icon that can be used to promote anything from liver paste to ice cream, sewing machines and hair dryers. The Vikings of the commercials rarely resembles the historical Vikings, but shows that the very concept of the Viking Age is present in most modern day Danes. It would seem that many people have a misconception as to what the word Viking stands for, in recent months all we have heard from various quarters is of rape and pillaging. Perhaps because that is the first thing that comes to mind for some, but if you take time to widen your knowledge, you may actually be amazed at what you find. Here we have but a few of the many sites pertaining to Vikings and Viking history.
